PRIVATE LIQUOR STORE OPERATORS SELECTED FOR REGINA

Regina will soon have two full-line private liquor stores.

Sobeys will operate a new store in the Rochdale Boulevard area in northwest Regina and Willow Park Wines & Spirits will open a store in Harbour Landing, located in south Regina.

“The business knowledge and experience in the retail liquor sector that both of these operators bring will ensure customers are well served,” Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority Donna Harpauer said.  “We look forward to having these partners operating in these two growing areas of Regina.”

The store operators were selected through a Request for Proposals process conducted by Deloitte.  Sobeys and Willow Park will both be building new stores – Sobeys expects to open in summer 2014 and Willow Park in spring 2014.  Sobeys is also opening a liquor store in the Stonebridge area of Saskatoon.

“Sobeys and IGA have a proud history of serving communities in Saskatchewan for more than 60 years, and although most people recognize Sobeys as a grocery retailer, we have a long history as a successful liquor retailer in Alberta,” Sobeys West Vice President of Community and Liquor Operations Brent Newman said.  “We’re looking forward to introducing a liquor store experience into Regina that is all about convenience, selection, service and providing an opportunity for customers to discover something new.”

“Regina has been good to us over the past three and half years that we’ve been operating our wine store,” Willow Park Wines & Spirits owner Wayne Henuset said.  “We’re excited about the opportunity to offer customers in south Regina a new, larger store with a greatly enhanced and expanded product selection.”

Saskatchewan's liquor retail system includes a mix of public and private operators.  There are currently 79 public liquor stores,  approximately 185 private businesses that operate as rural liquor franchises and approximately 440 private off-sale outlets located throughout the province.
