INQUEST INTO THE DEATH OF STANLEY ROBILLARD

A public inquest into the death of Stanley Robillard has been scheduled for December 9-13, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn in Saskatoon.

Robillard, age 46, was arrested for public intoxication in Saskatoon on July 15, 2010 and taken to the Saskatoon Police Service Detention Centre.  After being found unresponsive in his cell the following day, Mr. Robillard was transported to the Royal University Hospital, where he passed away.

Section 20 of The Coroners Act, 1999, states that the Chief Coroner shall hold an inquest into the death of a person who dies while an inmate at a jail or a correctional facility, unless the coroner is satisfied that the person's death was due entirely to natural causes and was not preventable.

The purpose of an inquest is to provide a public hearing to examine in detail the events surrounding a death.  In addition to establishing the medical cause of death and the manner of death, the coroner's jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.

Coroner Brent Gough, Q.C., of Saskatoon will preside at the inquest.
