The Government of Saskatchewan is fulfilling its commitment to provide funding to North East Outreach and Support Services Inc. for a new transition house in Melfort.

Work on the North East Domestic Violence Shelter began with a sod turning today.  Construction will largely be funded by $1.5 million provided by the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation through the Canada-Saskatchewan Investment in Affordable Housing 2011-2014 Agreement.

“I am pleased we were able to support this project through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation,” Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said.  “This investment provides a much-needed emergency shelter to women and children who are victims of family violence in this community.”

Additional funding will be provided through the Ministry of Justice for operational costs and ongoing program development.

“The Ministry of Justice has enjoyed a partnership with North East Outreach and Support Services for many years, and this agreement only makes this partnership stronger,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said.  “We are happy to assist with the ongoing development of this new transition house, the first one built in Saskatchewan since 1989.”

“As MLA and a former Mayor of Melfort, this project is special to me,” Melfort MLA Kevin Phillips said.  “I want to congratulate the staff and board of North East Outreach and Support Services for putting in the time and effort to see this project through to where it is today.”

The North East Domestic Violence Shelter is scheduled to open in 2015.  The facility will accommodate up to 20 individuals and provide a variety of support services.
